Completely restyled for 1978, the fifth-generation El Camino now mirrored the styling of the sharp-edged Malibu. For the first time in its history, the El Camino rode on an exclusive chassis that it did not share with any other model.
The top engine choice was a 350 CID V8 that developed 170 HP, just 5 HP shy of the final 400 CID big block of 1975. The fifth-gen El Camino could be ordered with a three-speed or four-speed manual transmission with a floor shifter.
Aldan American offers 18 different coilover kit combinations for the fifth-generation El Camino. These kits are 100% bolt-on, with no drilling, cutting or welding required for installation. Aldan Shocks are fully rebuildable and serviceable and are covered by our lifetime Forever Guarantee.
The adjustable shocks allow you to tune your El Camino’s ride to your preferences, and with threaded spring perches, and you can lower ride height by up to 2.0 inches at the front and 3.0 inches at the rear.

El Camino Coilover Conversion Kit
In this episode, Gary at Aldan American provides a walkthrough of Aldan’s 1964-1972 Chevrolet El Camino, front and rear coilover conversion kit at the Aldan Shock Lab.
This 1969 El Camino SS 396 is equipped with Aldan American Phantom Series coilovers on both the front and the rear of the vehicle.
