    Shock Absorber Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a shock absorber?

A shock absorber is a hydraulic dampening device that controls the movement of your vehicle’s suspension. Contrary to popular belief, shocks don’t actually support the vehicle’s weight—that’s the job of springs.

Instead, shock absorbers control how quickly the springs compress and rebound, preventing excessive bouncing and maintaining tire contact with the road. They convert the kinetic energy of suspension movement into heat through hydraulic fluid passing through precisely calibrated valves. This controlled damping is what provides stability, handling precision, and ride comfort in your vehicle.

How do I know when my shock absorbers need replacement?

It’s time for shock absorber replacement when you notice increased bouncing after bumps, nose-diving during braking, excessive body roll in corners, or uneven tire wear. Most vehicle shocks should be inspected after 50,000 miles, as performance often degrades gradually. A simple test is the “bounce test”—press down firmly on each corner of your vehicle and release. If the vehicle bounces more than once before settling, your shocks are likely worn.

What’s the difference between single and double adjustable shock absorbers?

Single adjustable shock absorbers allow you to tune one aspect of damping—typically rebound (how quickly the suspension extends). This gives you control over how your vehicle recovers from bumps and body roll. Double adjustable shocks provide separate control over both rebound and compression damping, allowing for much more precise tuning. For street driving, single adjustable shocks often provide sufficient customization. For performance driving or track use, double adjustable shock absorbers give you the complete control needed to optimize handling.

Are aluminum shock absorbers better than steel?

Aluminum can offer several significant advantages over steel. The reduced weight (typically 30-40% lighter) means less unsprung mass, allowing your suspension to react more quickly to road irregularities. Superior heat dissipation is another key benefit—aluminum transfers heat away from the shock fluid up to 5 times faster than steel, maintaining consistent performance during demanding driving. Also, aluminum naturally resists corrosion without requiring heavy protective coatings, making them ideal for long-term durability in varied climates and conditions.

Can I install shock absorbers myself, or do I need professional help?

Most  installations can be handled by experienced DIY enthusiasts if you have the right tools and mechanical knowledge. The process typically requires jack stands, wrenches, and sometimes spring compressors depending on your suspension design. Our truck shocks and car shocks are designed for direct bolt-on installation with no cutting or welding required. That said, proper torque specifications are crucial, and an alignment is recommended after installation. If you’re unsure about the process, our team is happy to help you out.
